Great Victorian Rail Trail
One of the best rail trails around. Surface is good and the scenery is great, particularly once you approach Bonnie Doon (from Tallarook direction).

This is a great trail for enjoying this amazing part of the Victorian country side. Grab a bike and take your time to ride this well made and maintained trail. It is not busy yet.. but Im sure it will get busy as more people discover the joy of this ride.Take plenty of water, there are few spots along the way to get water (or food).

We rode from Yea to Mansfield on the first day - it’s about 85ks and there is a slight uphill gradient for long sections - it’s not severe but could be very tiring for those that are not “ bike fit “. The track is quite firm, no pot holes and scenery coming in to Bonnie Doon is magnificent. Eildon is nearly full of water. We stayed at the Caravan park in Mansfield in a fantastic villa unit which I would highly recommend. The ride home the next day was a lot easier - Yarck is a great spot to pick some food, drink - and has a lovely cafe with outdoor dining at Dindi’s naturals just 25metres off the track. For those that ride in early springtime be aware - the magpies are everywhere and we were swooped constantly for most of the trip . A few of them around Merton actually hit our helmets which for some could be extremely stressful. That is the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. The next time we do it will not be in September though.

Excellent trail that runs through a few small towns where you can grab a coffee or other supplies en route. We rode from Tallarook to Mansfield, stayed the night and rode back. Doable but break it up depending on your fitness and interest in the small towns. Great accommodation, dinner options and coffee in Mansfield. Enjoy!

We did the rail trail from Bairnsdale to Lakes Entrance at Easter 2022.Be aware that the Mississippi trail south is (almost) impassable due to flood damage in early April. Multiple (15 to 20) very large trees across the path, and one bridge in need of replacement; plus long stretches of washed out / sandy / mud trail. Water has in places been about 2m deep. The sign at the northern end was a simple do not enter" - which we naively assumed was meant for trail bike riders.I'm sure in normal times this would be a great ride!"

Aiming to complete the GVRT this week..so excited to get a look at the newly installed sculptures on the trail.. loving them all so far and planning a return visit when it's all completed. Impressed the trail is well maintained with thoughtful inclusions and safety bollards and signs.. having a fabulous ride ..thanks.

Four of us just finished riding this picturesque, well maintained rail trail. It's a great one for fit kids because only on actual roads around town. Monarch butterflies everywhere added a migical touch. Always great to get out and about!

Great experience. Took 6 days to go up and back. I know some people do it in a day but we are fairly casual riders. Great facilities along the way.

I did this trail with my wife and children (ages 7 and 10). It was a struggle for the children, particularly the youngest, but it was manageable.Overall, it was an experience unlike our standard holidays and the challenge was a welcome lesson on resilience for the kids (which is good because they missed a week of school to do it).Highly recommended for all ages and groups.

Great Victorian Rail Trail
Easy ride, even for not-very-experienced cyclists. Varied scenery, places to rest or picnic, etc. Great way to spend the day without spending a cent!
