Craig Naughton - Owner/Director - Craig Naughton Music | LinkedIn | Australian Drummer/composer Craig Naughton was born in Sydney to a musical family and was exposed to music constantly as a child. At the age of 15 Craig was playing and performing around Sydney in small group Jazz ensembles and in Big Band settings, and in 1989 won the North Side Jazz award for best instrumentalist. Whilst completing a Music Maj in year 11 & 12, Craig was also attending the Conservatorium of Music - on weekends, studying harmony and theory under the direction of Julie Spithill (Syd Uni - extension Studies program.) After graduating from High School with a Distinction in music performance - Craig was excepted into the Sydney Conservatorium Jazz Course in 1993 'Jazz Studies - Dip' - at the same time gigging & recording as a freelance jazz drummer around Sydney and won the Billy Hydes playoff competition judged by Dennis Chambers. In 1994 also Craig completed (Diploma in Drumming and Percussion) at the Academy of Drumming and Percussion -Sydney. In 1996 Craig began playing on records as a sideman and as a Band leader one of which won an Aria Award for 'Best Jazz Album in 1998. In his capacity as a band leader/composer Craig has directed - composed for/ recorded and toured six bands locally and at Jazz Festivals overseas 'spanning a period of 18years 1996 to 2014. Craig has contributed to albums that have won Aria awards as well as nominations for Mo awards. As a freelance jazz drummer Craig has played for many well known luminaries in Australian jazz and rock including Galapagos Duck - James Muller trio - Steve Hunter Band - Steve McKenna Trio - The Enormous Horns - Troy Cassar Daley - Sonic Fiction - The Subterraneans & more . In addition, Craig has released an album for commercial sale, comprising entirely of original works, showcasing eleven of Australia's premier Jazz musicians including James Muller, Steve Hunter, Steve McKenna, Greg Coffin and Sean Wayland. In addition Craig Has recorded 2 EP's, one of which also features Sean Wayland and others. Craig now focuses on inspiring students in the craft, sharing years of experience across a very broad range of musical idioms.- and has taught for the University of NSW - The Australian Institute of Music & Jazz Workshop Australia.
