About the Business

inHerit - State Heritage Office | Heritage Council Places Database Lynton Convict Hiring Depot (Ruins) The limestone ruins of the Lynton convict hiring depot complex sit in a small valley near the coast at Port Gregory. Enough of the original fabric of two main buildings remains to gain some understanding of the place. The convict lockup building, with its holding cells, high perimeter, gable end walls and walled exercise yard, sits further up the valley than the other obvious ruins of the depot building. After the lockup building, the depot/hiring building is the most complete. Of the several other support buildings around the main depot most have largely disappeared or remain as piles of rubble or low walls. Interpretive signs, illustrating the layout of the complex, would help with an understanding of the place. 2004/05 Review: Works undertaken in late 2004 have resulted in one of the buildings being largely reconstructed and reroofed. Interpretive material has been installed.

Not much to see. However, it's on the way to the Pink Lagoon, so it's an easy stop.

An interesting piece of Australian history! The site has improved since we last saw it 20 years ago - interpretive signage, paths and some restoration. The added bonus of the restored Sandford House and Stables are open to view for gold coin donation. Also the mysterious story of our Anna" from the King and I. Worth the stop to stroll through some history."

Beautiful scenery portraying a fascinating past. The site is best walked early in the morning or the afternoon; to avoid the heat. Wear comfy shoes so you can properly investigate each point of interest.

Close to roadway. Easy park for caravans etc. In restoration stages and most of the buildings have gone ,but the documented history is well worth reading. I didn't stop at the farm due to time, but drove through and looked interesting.

Interesting place and obviously an important site. Sadly doesn’t get the attention it deserves, probably due to the location. Restoration is of an average standard. Some of the hand painted signs are inappropriate and somewhat offensive. Hopefully not part of the site. They appear more around the museum and house further down the road.

If your travels take you to Port Gregory or the Hutt Lagoon area... then take a moment to look at Lynton Convict Depot... it's WA's own little piece of history like Port Arthur, TAS. It's worth a look.

This is worth a look if you're passing. Some of the buildings have been restored, some preserved and others in ruins. There is a lot of different types of buildings to look at. Most are located together and a couple 600 meters down the road. There's some information in the depot but a lot more in the museum. If this review has been helpful please like it.
