Blues Point Bookshop
Very judge mental owner, I’ve gotten a few children’s books here over the past few years as gifts. The eye roll when I bought the new Bluey books (which my friend’s son absolutely adores) was the final straw. Not interested in supporting a business which shames customers for buying mainstream books. Plenty of other shops to support!!

Shockingly deplorable service. Some books were scruffy, dusty and marked. Stand out was a new publication that had scruffy pages yet marked as new.Incorrect prices marked on items and not honoured. We exclusively shop local for books but the prices at this shop were exorbitant. It is expected to pay more for small business, but some items were >50% more than other retailers. Not COVID compliant.Very limited stock but no option given to order.Just a run down, angry little store with dirty dusty books on top of even dirtier and dustier couches.Owner is not doing a local bookery any favours. Fortunately many other local bookshops that are competitive in both service and price to support such as Burns Bay Bookery, The Constant Reader in Crows Nest and Mosman and a multitude of book stores in Newtown and Surry Hills worthy of traveling out to.

Our visit today to Blues Point Bookshop was the highlight of our trip to Australia so far! I had scoped out the place online before we even left the States, wanting to find a spot that could recommend some quality books by Australian authors for our three kids (ages 11, 7 and 6). Owner Helen did not disappoint. The bookshop is small and cozy but has an excellent curated selection of kids literature by many Australian authors. Helen picked out multiple titles to recommend for each child, with plenty of personal tidbits about each title and author. The kids sat on the sofas and perused the recommended books until they each had found one they loved. They read their chosen books all day long during breaks around Sydney, and our time in Australia is already richer as a result. Helen also recommended several Australian titles for me based on other books I mentioned I had enjoyed. I highly recommend a stop by Blues Point Bookshop if you hope to make Australian literature a part of the experience. We left happy, with a big bag full of books for us and for gifts back home in the US.

Bad vibes. Have previously bought from this shop, but the rude owner glared at my picking up of a free Northsider guide, asked me to unneccesarily move out of the way for her and another customer, reorganised books I had touched aggressively in my space and then asked me not to flick through her fragile" books IN A BOOK SHOP. We visit McMahons Point regularly

Some friends and I walked in intending to buy a book or two to celebrate the end of semester. We love bookshops and some of us even have Instagram accounts dedicated to books, we really enjoy promoting book shops and reading. Naturally we wanted to take some photos because the place was so lovely looking and we were excited to find such a cute little shop. However after being told very aggressively by the owner that there would be no photos we put our devices away and didn't attempt to take any more pictures. She was on the phone the entire time except when she stopped to tell us twice more to not take any photos despite the fact that we hadn't made any attempt to after being told the first time. I think it's perfectly acceptable for her to control photography within her store, but there was absolutely no need to treat us like naughty children and be so hostile when we were clearly just delighted to be in such a lovely shop. The selection of books is great, and under different circumstances I'm sure I would have walked out with a stack of books, but she just made us want to leave. book shops should be wonderful and exciting places, but instead we left feeling sad and disappointed.

Absolutely beautiful shop that I could spent hours in. The owner is lovely and takes community safety at this time seriously which I really appreciate. Always love coming for a relaxing browse (even if I am wearing gloves and a mask for few minutes - a small thing in the scheme of things and to help small local businesses) and I always come away with something great.

The woman was rude from the moment we went into the bookstore. We were going to buy, but the final straw to put things down and walk out was when she told us not to bend the spines as we browsed the books. Nothing but a bad experience.

I make a habit of visiting as many bookstores as I can when I go somewhere new, and this was the most pleasing of the lot in Sydney. And the neighborhood it's in is great, too. I truly don't understand the negative reviews here. Yes, it's small and the selection might be less (and predominantly of new releases and classics) than other places, but that's kinda the point, isn't it? Plus, I had a good conversation with the very knowldgable owner, who ended up recommending a ferry ride and a visit to Manly Beach, which led to meeting people at a bar there, which led to a day trip to the Megalong Valley, which led to seeing the Milky Way in the southern hemisphere for the first time, and a staring contest with a wombat...all because I popped into this bookstore on a windy day and had a chat. Thanks for that.
