Rankines at The Whistle Stop
It's a shame that the service at this place is so bad. The waitress (manager?) comes across as quite cold and uninterested. A number of other tables were seated well after us but their orders were taken before. We (and at least three other tables that we saw) had to ask for menus 15 minutes after being seated! The food is overpriced and our dishes were 'okay' apart from some well overcooked prawns (very rubbery), but the chef cooked some more once we pointed it out to the waitress. The salt shakers need a good clean - we saw serveral people unscrewing theirs just so they could get salt out - shaking them did nothing! Goolwa has good restaurants, but this isn't one of them based on our experience.

Great experience. We had the steak and fish. Beautifully cooked, reasonably priced, hospitable service. Zero complaints. Will be back.

Rankines at The Whistle Stop
My companions assured me that the Whistestop Cafe had a long-standing good reputation, but from my experience, that time has passed.This past weekend Goolwa, and the whole nearby coastal area, was positively heaving with families and friends looking to get out and about for the day, or even the weekend. Lineups well out the doors were commonplace and this was a factor in choosing which cuisine suited the timeline! The Whistlestop required a booking, hmmm ok, no big deal. The motive for this might have been a logistical consideration or COVID compliance? But, it had nothing to do with overwhelming patronage. Upon arrival the elderly female person, apparently running the place, cast a disapproving eye our way and the impression was frosty; akin to walking into a domestic house immediately following a robust discussion. Once this lady determined that we did have a booking, only then would she reluctantly show us to a table - there were no other customers at the time.The poor service caused me to lose my appetite but my companions were not keen to battle lines elsewhere and we did stay for a meal. The meals themselves were actually served fresh and quickly and were actually of high quality. The coffee I did have had would get 3/10; I can make better with a Nespresso machine.So, overall it's a two thumbs down from this customer.Great service will keep people coming back, and nowadays, Managers and Business Owners must realise that many customers base initial choices on readily available reviews.

Very enjoyable experience, quality tasty food in very pleasant surroundings,indoor or outdoor eating,small bar,main meals and daily specials up to 36.00bucks for a 220gm scotch,bit dear perhaps, if 300gm would not feel a bit short changed,it is yum as it needs to be,had room left for desert and they were excellent nut sundae, cheesecake,affagato icecream with frangelico,sticky date pudding.Would go again

Had dinner with friends. Menu was limited, but food was very good. Service was a little lacking, unconfident, perhaps new staff?Would go again.

Rankines at The Whistle Stop
What a great little cosy “cafe” with restaurant quality meals.We had the croquettes, the gnocchi, tagine and for dessert the fig tart and sticky date pudding - all extremely well balanced favours delivered with a high level of service.We will definitely be back!
