Melissa Opie is a bully and a disgrace to the real estate industry. I feel for any of her tenants who fall victim to her intimidation and bullying tactics. I whole heartedly believe the only reason Melissa has so many 5 star google reviews is because she begs for them, or in my case, asked for one in exchange for my rental reference.Upon giving my notice to vacate there was a noticeable shift in the way Melissa treated me as a tenant and she went out of her way to make the process difficult. Throughout my whole tenancy she was condescending, rude and spoke down to me, but once I was officially moving on from my lease things got even worse. There were so many examples of Melissa being unethical I can’t even list them all.Melissa made a mountain out of a molehill on multiple occasions and threatened to withhold my bond. Funnily enough, as I know my rights, I did not fall victim to her ridiculous end of lease requests. Despite her pressuring me to return to the property, I did not, and I still got my bond refunded in full, as Melissa didn’t have a leg to stand on when it came to officially contesting my bond at VCAT.I had heard Melissa had a terrible reputation before I rented a property through her office, and I wish I had listened to my gut and never rented from her in the first place. If you are having trouble with Melissa, I’d highly recommend seeking advice from other industry professionals or consumer affairs. Melissa frames lies as facts. Do not take her word for it when it comes to your rights and obligations as a tenant, do your own research.

Melissa has been my agent for ten years and has been extremely good and professional during all that time. She has found tenants who have felt at cared for my house - this has helped to protect my house and made a happy home for our tenants. Melissa’s always been helpful and supportive for both me and our tenants. Would highly recommend her as a property manager.

The law states that “Rental providers (landlords) and estate agents can only advertise or offer rental properties at a fixed price. They are banned from inviting rental bids or soliciting offers of rent higher than the advertised price.”I attended an open recently that Melissa was facilitating, during which she obviously was inviting rental bids with comments such as “I’ve had many applicants so far that have offered higher than the listed price”. While it’s not unlawful to accept an application at a higher price, it is unlawful to solicit rental bids. This kind of behaviour also artificially inflates prices and exacerbates the problems in the rental market.I guess we got to see Melissa’s ethics right up front and saved us the drama of engaging with her. We most certainly will not be engaging with her or her company either now or in the future, no matter how lovely the property was.Read all of the reviews. Our gut feel is that she would be a nightmare to deal with - and a significant number of other people concur.I’m sure Consumer Affairs would also like to have a chat.
