I leased a small office space in Summer Hill managed by DWP property. Proximity to our home was the main driver with not too many options available nearby. The entire floor of the office was largely untenanted with the only other office being DWP’s own site office. Darren was very friendly at our first meeting, and we eventually signed a lease.However, from day one things became a problem. I was never provided with keys to the building. Instead given a remote to gain access via a garage door. Within a short time, the garage door required repair, and I was locked out of the building for a week. Darren told me multiple times he would be there each morning to provide me access, but never arrived.Over the first few months of my tenancy, I was continually locked out of the communal kitchen and bathroom. Darren was unhelpful when I brought up these issues and made multiple excuses on why he had locked the doors – I eventually secured access when I physically blocked the door from being closed and locked with a spare table.During this time, he was adamant on me paying for cleaning costs, even though I had not been given access to the kitchen or bathroom, and it was brutally obvious that the building had not had any cleaning. The entire building was caked in builder dust from a recent renovation, and when I did get access to the bathrooms there was no provision of basics like soap, toilet paper or hand towels. Locks to the male bathroom were broken, with many visitors getting stuck inside. I had requested for the locks to be repaired multiple times, and till the day I moved out, it was not done.Over my 12-month lease, we had multiple issues, including Darren doubling the portion of my utility bill based purely on ‘that’s the way the world works’. It was obvious that out of laziness or incompetence, he was not across his own contracts.This has been part my experience dealing with DWP, with other tenants of the building having similar issues. My advice – if you are considering leasing from Darren, arrange a walk through and take note of a few of the other tenants. Contact them discretely and ask about their experiences.
