Been a long time customer - love Mel’s work especially given how difficult my hair is. Recommend her for everyone with difficult hair who wants colours not found in nature.

Had my hair dyed to the colour cerise and flamingo pink and the amazing ladies at doppelganger worked very hard to make this happen, highly recommend to anyone that wishes to go a brighter colour! Fantastic vibes as well

Today was my first dapple at Doppleganger Hair. I tried this place out based on Reddit recommendations and I'm so glad I did!The team is super fun and inclusive, they ask your pronoun preference and you get snacks!The energy is caring and lively. I felt like they absolutely understood my vision and brought it to life far greater than I could have dreamed. I still can't believe this hair is mine, thankyou for making me feel at home in my body and freaking badass!Kitty, Melissa and Amanda you three absolutely unreal, thankyou so much. I'll be back!

Wanting to find a hair salon that would best suit my needs, as an alternative person, I found DH on Google, and was excited to finally find someone that could replace my usual hair salon that is no longer in operation. Enquiring with the owner, they quoted me an “initial price” for a cut (and I assume wash and blow dry was included) at $110.They went further to say that this was an initiative to make it gender neutral.I get needing to stay afloat, financially, but this just sounds like it’s intended to make it inaccessible to a vast majority of people. That’s not gender neutral - that’s outright classist, and goes against any ethos of the community that this hair salon is taking advantage of, just to make more money.Shameful, to say the bare minimum.Edit: in light of the owner replying - yes, it does make you classist to expect people to pay a “gender neutralised” price, which ends up pushing away a lot of prospective clients that simply can’t afford it. That is what classism is, by definition.Feel free to scroll through the messages sent and received on that day, no mention of a free consultation is made, and I had to ask what that price actually included, because “your polite and friendly management” chose to leave those details out of the initial contact messages when giving the price.And no, I’m certainly not entitled to anything (never said I was, by the way), but going off the response to my initial review, and that of the person I spoke to on Instagram, I’d find far better customer service skills at either K-Mart or McDonalds. Toodles. :)

I've been a client of Melissa's (the owner) since the late 90's. She's worked miracles on my hair throughout that time, because I'm not always nice to my hair, and continues to amaze me with her creativity. Nowadays she's including 'retro' hair-do's for the burgeoning Swing and Rockabilly scene. Top notch work.Always a keen supporter of local arts and the community, I don't know where Newtown would be without Melissa and Doppelganger Hair's patronage.28/01/2023: Just wanted to update on my older review. I continue to frequent Melissa's salon and will do so forever I think. When it comes to colourists, she is second to none, an absolute expert in her trade. Her attention to others needs is also second to none and she goes out of her way to help out anyone and everyone who walks through her door, and has always done so. She tirelessly tried to help people even during the pandemic shutdowns by posting out directions and other products and giving individual advice.It's very much a Trans and Queer friendly space and M. has always endeavoured to be so. It pains me to see people write things about the salon that are simply untrue.Rock on Melissa and everyone at DH. You're superb human beings. <3

Doppleganger Hair creates a welcoming place for the queer and trans community, while delivering incredible looks.I’ve gone from copper red to platinum blonde with Mel, and have my healthiest hair to date. Couldn’t recommend more.
