When the only tempura dish on the menu was tempura potatoes with matcha salt, extra $3 for mayo. you know that someone has somehow made a terrible mistake on what used to be one of the most iconic Japanese restaurant in Brisbane.Hosakawa was a restaurant where you received an education on how Japanese food was meant to be enjoyed. Expectedly pricey, but instantly understood once you tasted the food. Warm, uncompromising, comforting, unpretentious.I recall a time during COVID when the chef refused to serve nigiri because he wasn't allowed to craft it with his bare hands. Such level of stubbornness made certain you got what you paid for.That day, we were forced to settle for their sashimi, and were delighted by the chunky, most expertly sliced and prepared sashimi that was served with delicious, freshly grated wasabi. We imitated the Japanese family next table and ordered a basket of tempura, agedashi tofu, miso to go with a few bowls of rice. Food heaven. An education every visit.Until now.Respectfully, I get that business can be challenging, and there are better margins in tempura potatoes. But this new direction (entree, main, lights, puree splatter, cocktail) just isn't for us. Enjoy your retirement the older, stubborn chef. You will be missed.I leave you with a photo of the updated menu, and let the $70 topic thunder inspired 'large' sashimi platter say the rest. (Hint: compare photo with one taken last year).

The sashimi platters are very good value for the bucks. Good variety, big portion, each slices are very big and thick. Have tried many other different dishes. Delicious but not as good value as the sashimi platters. Service is alright. This is a very busy place, booking is a must.

$110 - Quite pricey for 2 meals and 6 pieces of nigiri. Staff are very nice but expect slow service as it gets pretty busy. Patience is a must :)

We LOVE Hosokawa. It is our favourite Japanese restaurant for its fresh seafood and everything is just absolutely delicious. We spend all our special occasions here and it’s become a special place for us. The service is fantastic too. I couldn’t fault them. The small eggplant dish is a must try.

Very nice Japanese restaurant. The Sashimi was fresh and presented beautifully. The food was good but unfortunately not many vegetarian dishes. A couple of the vegetarian items on the menu had sold out but the Chef kindly offered to make me a curry with potatoes that was not on the dinner menu.
