Hall's Gap Fish and Chips

My husband and I had a good chuckle at the reviews. Surely no fish and chip shop could be that bad? We couldn't help ourselves but give it a go...Deciding that we didn't want to waste too much money, we settled on a small chips and, at the last moment, threw caution to the wind and also ordered a single potato cake.$4 for a small portion of chips didn't seem too outrageous. We were surprised that the young staff were quite polite and our order didn't take very long at all to cook. The small portion of chips were crunchy, quite tasty and had a decent amount of salt. It was smaller than I would expect for $4 but way bigger than expected based on the previous reviews. (To be fair, the menu does clearly say that a small portion is 500g which is about the size of two smallish potatoes - so at least they're honest...) The potato cake seemed to be a relatively normal size so no real surprises there. Generic tasting, but definitely lower quality than the kind found at a train station at 2am.The staff made no efforts to hide the fact that none of the food was fresh (we saw the small portions of fish coming straight out of frozen packets).In conclusion, for $5.50, it was a pretty ok snack for 2 people after a boozy stint at a winery. Did we encounter any 'suicidal thoughts'? No.Would we eat there again? Also no.

We went in with low expectations thanks to the google reviews, and were relatively pleasantly surprised. $12 or so for a flake and chips with sauce seems reasonable, the fish was pretty decent, albeit greasy - what else would you expect out of a deep fryer. Will try one of the home made burgers next time.

Dishonest shop. We ordered butterfish and were told to come back 10 minutes later. When we came back then, shop assistant gave us a pack of large chips instead. Refused to change for us when we explained that we order fish. Told us there wasnt butterfish today. Wanted to charge us for another fish if we wanted. Chips tasted horrible in the end. Bad service and bad food.Note: The staff definitely did not repeat the order multiple times, and how she took our order down as chips when we mentioned butterfish really beats me. Left the store because staff seemed unwilling to change and staff suddenly said there was no butterfish. We returned to the store within a minute because it didnt felt right and in the end wanted to get a flake instead.

We don't have another option for eating because we don't want to stop by during our travel. So we have to go this store where only one in halls cap. We didn't get our hopes up, but fish and chips was really good. It was the best fish and chips in my life. But chips was too thick. We prefer thin and crunchy , but this one is only our taste, so It cannot be a problem :) I didn't give 5 stars because we ordered burger, too, but burger was not good, but it is okay. Your store main food is FISH AND CHIPS". Thanks for making happy travel!"

Worst fish and chips I've ever had. Paid $10 for fresh" fish that was the size of a crab stick and taste like cardboard. Chips were burnt and paid $30 for absolutely nothing. Went back and complained and got a refund

$38 dollars for worst fish n chips ever eaten. Terrible. Nothing positive to say than eat elsewhere when getting takeaway in lovely town of Halls Gap. Should have read reveiws...should have taken back for refund.Don't eat here.Thanks for your response. Looking at other customers to your business getting a refund would have been a long process.One experience in your shop was enough.Some advice. Improve your business before you go out of business.Cheers.

Even though we read all the terrible reviews we decided to try it anyway as there wasn't much options within the town. It definitely wasn't great. The lady at the counter was very happy and nice though. But unfortunately the food was terrible, I honestly don't know how you get chips wrong, but they were overcooked, dry and lacked flavour. The burger was just a burnt patty on a square roll ($8!) and the fish ($12) was overcooked and tasted like it had been frozen for a very long time. Better going next door to the supermarket and making yourself something! Hopefully they improve though as it is a lovely town (try the ice cream shop on the corner! Amazing!)

Myself and my partner were in halls gap for the Melbourne cup long weekend. After reading the reviews on Google we were hesitant but decided to try it anyway. Our concerns were put to rest after we opened the box and tasted the golden goodness. Chips were great, fish was decent, potato cakes though small we were given extra which made up. Decent feed. Don't think it deserves a 1 star. If you agree with us we hope you can give this local business a good review.

Have you ever wanted to torture the taste buds so bad that death is a better option? If so, the halls gap fish and chip shops the way to go! We arrived at 11:15, so according to the hours provided the shop should of been open. As we were standing at the door looking at the store, a friendly local walked in to the lolly shop and then came back out. He said that the owners were in the shop, out the back. This was a surprise as the store looked closed. Five minutes later, they decided to turn on the lights and put the sign out the front. We reluctantly purchased our food at an expensive price, only to find out that not only was the food expensive it was of low quality and minimal quantity. $6 worth of chips did not fill us up. It was not even the size of a minimum. If you do have to buy food here. We suggest throwing out the chips and eating the paper and the owner.

Wish we had read reviews before we threw our money away. At best they are incompetent and at worst are outright thieves. $24 for 2 pieces of fish, chips and 2 potato cakes, and we were only given one piece of fish. Taste wise it was fine but the potato cakes were tiny and the amount of chips was a joke. Never again.
