Dead Man’s Hill Signboard
Between Peterborough and Broken Hill, right beside the live highspeed railway line, there is an Australian National (AN) signboard saying Dead Man’s Hill. The story goes: In the early 1900s in the middle of summer, a fettler died while working on the track at Dead Man's Hill. As the deceased apparently had no relatives, he was given a Christian burial on the hill.Near this signboard, there is a white wooden cross on the hill marking the grave. In recent years, it is believed, a retired train driver from Pt. Pirie along with his mates from the railway has been visiting the site and has restored the cross.I did not know about the cross when I visited this site. If I had, I would have looked for it. If you go looking, be very mindful of highspeed trains and the scorching summer sun. If you make it there, do add a photo of the cross here.Tip: The white cross on the grave can be clearly seen on Google Street View. On Street View stand on Barrier Highway (A32) directly opposite this signboard and zoom in. The cross is on a hill to the left of the signboard.
