Barrer Hill

Worth visiting to see the fruits of massive Molonglo Reserve restoration work which will eventually re-magic this place

A good place for a different walk around Canberra. Be prepared to walk a good distance from parking, probably around 5 kilometres return. Good views from top. Watch for kangaroos.

Great place to bush walk at the Molonglo Valley

I parked my car at the end of Kirkpatrick Street, just past the RSPCA. From there it was easy to follow the bike path and then fire trails alongside the Molonglo River to reach Barrier Hill. I ventured down to the river's edge on the north side of Barrier Hill, where there is less of the scrubby growth that blocks access to most of the shoreline. I then returned to my starting point by following other firetrails through the pine forests. The mostly open slopes around Barrier Hill make for good views in all directions -- including Black Mountain and the National Arboretum to the north, the city to the east and the Brindabellas range to the west. I was disappointed, however, to see those slopes being taken over by significant infestations of blackberry, thistles, and tussock. Much work has been done to try to improve the area, and quite a few signs installed to explain these efforts.

Great little lookout overlooking the molonglo valley river corridor. Will be amazing when all the trees grow as there is currently no shade. Steep but short incline to get to top. Paths are well maintained. Unfortunately the hill is covered in weeds and thistles after all the amazing restoration work done in 2019, I hope the govt deals with the weeds soon to give all the natives they planted a chance.

Bush regeneration in progress, it will be more spectacular once the planted trees grow. A lovely walk nevertheless, but sturdy shoes are recommended!

Pleasant, easy track walking five minutes drive from Cooleman Court.

A great place for a walk. Good views of the river and the new Molonglo Valley suburbs. A couple of steeper sections, so hiking shoes may be a good idea.

A fine hill. Good for walking or running up. A nice look out bench at the top.

I visited this spot on one of my rides and it is another spot in Canberra where, within a few hundred metres you move from suburbia to the bush with no development in sight in a 360 degree view. We are spoilt in Canberra.
