Moonlight Head Cemetery
This yard is on the land of the Eastern Maar Traditional Owners and the Traditional Custodians of Gadubanud country, The Gunditjmara people. There is no historical information at the site, apart from the grave stones, but the sign on the wooden shelter says this cemetery was begun in 1906. There is also a small gravesite and memorial for those who lost their lives in the shipwreck of the Fiji in 1891 on nearby Wreck Beach. The grave site and marble monument dedicated to them is hidden in deep scrub on the headland above Wreck Beach, near impossible to find or reach, and it seems Parks Vic have no interest in making it accessible to the public, sadly. This graveyard is still in use with historic graves and memorials up to present day. There is a stone shelter with open sides and a wooden table with bench seats out in the open next to it. There are no facilities and there's no water. Parking is in a flat dirt area opposite. It's a few kilometers drive down a dirt road to get there, and you end up high on the headland with a view out to sea, surrounded by low coastal scrub. If you're there at the right time of year there are small hardy flowers Indigenous to the area if you look for them. There is also a very complex sun dial on a stone plinth if you want to tell the time without electricity. Visiting this yard feels very much like stepping back in time, it's a spectacular windswept headland with a view out to sea that makes for a unique cemetery.
