Could be better signposted. There’s a large sign saying the chimneys are down Rossmore rd, but by the time you’ve gone through the 3rd private property sign can feel that you have passed it. But don’t worry , it’s at the end of the road. , past the last ditch

Great place to visit, full of history, well worth the drive out there. Not too far from Kilkivan.

Awesome to see, good quick trip with the kids, dirt road. Don't stop at the Trespassing sign, its a public road.

Well it is 14 km down a bitumen gravel road with the first creek crossing being the sliperest. Was a bit shocked. Lots of crossings most are concrete but the last 2 or 3 were pebbles rocks. Not many signs for it. More or less the end of the road. The chimney is fenced off so a bit disappointing. But very interesting to see how they built it.

First time i've been there & quite surprised that the chimney stack is still standing after being constructed in 1873 making it 147 years old. They built them good to last back in those early days. Unlike the chimneys of nowadays. Brick & rock makes for a long standing Mount Clara Smelter chimney.

A good little part of history here. One can only imagine what is was like back then. I drove in on a good gravel road and you don’t need a 4wd to get here from the Kilkivan end anyway. I have never heard of this place before, I’m glad I took the drive. I love coming across places like this and great to see it being maintained.

Not much there, except for the chimney, remnants of the smelter, and some slag heaps. They did it tough back in 1873. Copper mine located 1-1/2 km away, now sealed up, on private property and inaccessible. Nice drive from the highway, mostly single lane, last 4-1/2 km dirt; all cement creek crossings except for a difficult final one just before the smelter. Peaceful place.

Lovely 8k drive from Kilkivan Bush Retreat to this amazing restored brick and rock Mt Clara smelter chimney structure.Nice drive over about 8 concrete water crossings in wet weather to carpark area which is at the end of the road maintained by the Gympie Shire council.Interesting to take in the 2 year history of the Smelter.

Historical Site from a bygone age. Difficult road, but worth persevering to see some Aussie Ingenuity and skill in doing the almost impossible in country that defies belief in regards to it's rugged beauty and it's almost inaccessible sights....that's in the twenty first century and only 40 km from Gympie, think of how it was in 18, and 19th. The car in the pics could NOT go any further!
