You can't judge a book by its cover !! So trueWe stoped at this place with friends while travelling to Phillip island. So we stopped over to get some food and stayed in the pub's grounds over night in our friends caravan. Although the pub appears very basic, but you can be sure of the quality of the food and friendly welcoming service second to none. Really glad we stoped there.

Place has gone down hill ever since under new management. They do not cater to dietary requirements and the publican is rude and has zero people skills. Do not bother.

Lunch Monday 13 March23 (Public Holiday) Limited MenuNot busy (Our party of 6 adults)Cleanliness - Average. Needs new tables & chairs. 3/5Food - BIG meals, tasty and served within good timeframe. 5/5Drinks - Over priced! 1pt Lemon/Lime & Bitters $12 and not great either. Jug soft drink $15 and two flavours just dead flat! These prices are dearer than metro Melb/Syd pubs and clubs, and for a average venue as this should be $10 a jug tops.Would I go back, maybe for the food but would only drink water.

Made an impromptu stop for dinner at the Winch - did not regret. The crumbed chops were finger licking good. Good range of beers and wines and friendly locals.

The meals are enormous. We shared the Panko Crumbed Haloumi Fries between 2 people. Before I finished the entree, the Chicken Schnitzel and the main size Thai Beef Salad were delivered to our table. Neither of us finished our meals, purely because they were so large. The food was tasty but I think most people would be happy to pay fractionally less or the same and get a main course that was half the size.As we were attending a live show at the hotel, the main dining room was set up for the show and all meals were being served in the bar area or outside.I suspect there was a combination of lots of new staff and that all meals were being served in the bar area, but things seemed a bit unorganised. The table numbers didn't appear to be in any sort of order so staff delivering meals couldn't easily know which table they were taking the meals to, even with table numbers on display. All the staff were pleasant, it's a great venure for live music and I'd definitely go back, but would order an entree for a main course.

The Barwon Hotel may look a little grungy, but we were happy to find it a welcoming place for lunch. We sat in the bar dining area, with a nice wood fire (it was unseasonally cold for October), and put a couple of bets on while we waited. The kids meals were served super fast and really nice. The veggies were lovely, fish and chips generous. We both had Bob's special. The size was HUGE, and the panko crumbed sausage when dipped in egg yolk and gravy was seriously too die for. Chips excellent too! Crumbed sausages used to be a thing in the 80s/90s, they should still be a thing now. They also have Kievs and a range of good looking schnitzels. Staff and locals were very welcoming and friendly to top it off. We'll be back, thank you.

A quaint pub with excellent views of the surrounding gardens. The staff are lovely and the food is very affordable. My schnitzel came out piping hot and was cooked perfectly. My friend asked for something that was not on the menu and the kitchen gave her what she wanted (nearing the close of kitchen hours too). Their customer service is exceptional. Definitely check out the Barwon Hotel next time you pass through Winchelsea.
