This was a mix between serious ghost hunt and theatrical horror house.The atmosphere at night is amazingly solemn and creepy.We were told some interesting history on the tour. I wish I had done a little more research into the history before the tour so that I could have put myself into the experience more.

Went on an evening guided tour, with the lights out, rain, cold, and a spooky atmosphere! Highly recommended as the tour guide showed patience and a depth of knowledge, as well as flexibility regarding what our group wanted to hear about and look at. Probably could have been condensed into 60 mins, and not he cheapest tour, but I got my money's worth.

Fantastic experience and was a great morning out. We just did the self guided tour and enjoyed the observations and stories about previous employees. Very interesting history and easy to navigate. Highly recommend if you're in the area! Only suggestion I have for visitors is probably leave the younger kids at home! My older two (7 & 5) enjoyed it but the 3 year old got bored quickly.

Maitland gaol was a great experience with a great audio tour from your own mobile phone. I was able to stream this straight to my cochlear implants and also have the transcript to read as well for full accessibility. We’re looking forward to coming back when we can tour the towers.

An absolute must see!!! We did the self guided tour and it took about 2 hours taking our time completely. It's a very educational and eye-opening experience. It's quite chilling and sad to see but a must see. The staff member at the reception was very lovely and helpful!!!! The audio and written materials for the self guided tour were A grade and really have a great understanding. Take headphones with you, otherwise you can play it outloud on your phone no problem.

Fascinating and confronting - the prison is in an excellent state of preservation and the various eras are well represented in the surviving buildings. The stories from inmates and guards range from sad to spine chilling. An important relic of Australian history preserved for everyone to visit.

I have been here now 3 times over the years for different tours and still love going back. I would recommend the self guided audio tour if you like to go solo and listen/look at your own pace but if you prefer a group atmosphere then check out there variety of themed night tours. The site has an intriguing history which contributes to its eerie feeling. It's a place you must visit if you're in the area or passing through. It's easy enough to find once in Maitland and parking isn't usually a problem. Staff/guides are fantastic and there really is a tour for everyone. There are bathrooms on-site for use and tickets are reasonably priced.

I came here years ago to watch a prison movie in the exercise yard but only just recently did a self guided tour. It is done through an app which is easy to navigate, but make sure you bring some earphones. Not sure what those without a smart phone would use if they don't do a guided tour. I would love to go back to do a ghost/night tour. Very cold so make sure to rug up in winter.

My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed the ‘Crimes of Passion’ night tour. Our knowledgable and charismatic guide, Robyn and her storytelling ability made it an immersive and memorable experience. We’d recommend this tour and a visit to Maitland Gaol, and will be sure to return :)
