I came to Active 8 Gym for one month whilst on uni placement. They have the best variety of classes and a great space! All instructors are super welcoming, would highly recommend this gym if you’re visiting Mt Gambier!

Dear Activ8,SOCIAL Netball has provided us with the opportunity to meet new people, make friends, learn a new sport (for some), gain fitness and occasionally have fun. I’ve included the adverb of frequency ‘occasionally’ because of the tedious, condescending and patronising behaviour that certain umpires consistently exhibit towards PAYING CUSTOMERS.I stressed ‘paying customers’ because that is what we are, and as regular paying customers we do not deserve to be spoken to in an extremely condescending (unprovoked) manner by umpires. The umpire ‘Bev’ needs to be spoken to her regarding her ability to appropriately communicate with customers. Her patronising and uncalled-for aggressive mannerisms make the game unenjoyable. In addition to her tyrannical berating instructions, the game is constantly stopped due to minuscule technicalities that border on insanity (for MIXED-SOCIAL netball) and we are robbed of our time and therefore money (we all pay to play, not to stand around listening to Bev blow a whistle and talk for half the game). These comments are not sour grapes, in fact our team convincingly won the last match that was officiated by Bev. The game was played in good spirits by both teams, BUT both teams were constantly irritated by the officiating and the behaviour of the officials, predominantly Bev. When I POLITELY spoke to the other umpire (because logically social netball needs two umpires) about the condescending manner that the other umpire exhibits, she said “That’s Bev, that’s just how she is… Get used to it if you want to play here”. Notice that I wasn’t complaining about an umpiring decision (that happens in sport), I was complaining about her maniacal conduct and I was provided with an extremely unprofessional response. Please think of the following hypothetical situation involving my profession (I’m a teacher) – You call my school, informing me that bullying is taking place in my classroom. You inform me that your son (student A) is being bullied by another student (student B). My response is: “Well… That’s just the way that student B is, so you and your son (student A) will just have to deal with it”. Could you seriously imagine such a response? I can’t, because not only would it be extremely unprofessional, it would also be disrespectful and simply unethical. If she hates being there and gets visibly irate when calling decisions that she expects each player to fully comprehend, then perhaps she shouldn’t be officiating social netball games. Just to provide you with an additional example, she berated me for not comprehending that ‘out of play’ in netball meant standing directly beside your opponent. This rule is only logical to someone that has played netball before (it was my first ever game). Alternatively, she could have explained what ‘out of play’ meant in a professional or even good-humoured manner – BUT she chose to look angry, raise her voice and simply repeat the words ‘OUT OF PLAY’ like an enraged toddler screaming for chocolate. The opposition player kindly informed me what it meant.I have been fortunate to both play and officiate a sport that I love at a high level and not even federation referees officiate in the manner that Bev does. Can you please remind her that she is officiating mixed-social netball and not to speak in a condescending manner to paying customers. Many paying customers feel the same and a general, kindly-worded reminder would be very much appreciated.Thank you and kind regards,Billy Eraserain
