Cooktown, small but steeped in history, the locals are very proud to have had Captain Cook visit over 250 years ago to repair the Endeavour from hitting a reef.

Great public space with panoramic views of the mountains north across the inlet to the Endeavour. Lot of covered seats, bbqs, fishing jetties, grass. Toilets and a kids water feature at the western end. Parking is ample and easily fits a 6.4m motorhome ... probably a metre longer would be fine.

The waterfront is where I go most mornings for exercise. There is a splendid view of the Endeavour River, the mountain ranges, and the coastline. There is a waterpark for the children, and a recently opened kiosk where you can purchase coffee and breakfast. At 6am there are dogs taking their owners for a walk, and other like minded people exercising. There are some workout stations around the waterfront but they are designed more so for the novice body builders, and of course the children. There is always something happening. People fishing off the wharf, boats heading out to fish, or snorkel, around the Great Barrier Reef, and trawlers coming in with their catch towing a flotilla of small boats behind. On weekends the waterfront caters for the families where their children spend endless hours playing in the waterpark. What more can I say except, what a way to start the day.

The town council of cooktown should be commended for the fabulous water front and facilities namely phone charging outlets, water taps a plenty for fishers, beautiful footpaths, lawns ,covered shelters, water playground, not least the dedicated fishing spots all along the rock wall. Many country towns should take note . 10/10

There is so much history in the town, we parked the car and then walked down the Main Street going in and out of all the little cute shops and found lots of historical statues along the waterfront, Anzac Park and a new free water park they have opened at the end of town. This is a great place to be with excellent views and small town vibes. It’s also all sealed road from cairns to Cooktown so can be accessed easily by any vehicle or a good spot to leave your caravan while doing a run to the top“Jonique Life”Follow our journey around Australia on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube as we highlight wonderful experiences and magical places you can add to your ever growing bucket list.

Water play area plus nice bbq areas make this a good place to spend an afternoon. Small platforms are provided for fisher-type persons. Toilets and showers available.
