Don't underestimate the climb it is hard work but steps have been maintained in reasonably good order. We then carriedmon walking to the ruined castle is a great hike. The road to the golden steps is pretty rough but go slow and you will be okay.

You evil bastard staircase. I hate you but I'll be back to climb you again as you are a gateway to lovely walking tracks.

The walk out along Narrow Neck is also great with endless views into the Kanangra-Boyd national park as you make your way out to Tarros Ladder

Newly renovated after the bushfires! Steep, but possible :) My favourite walk in the Blue Mountains - from Katoomba to Golden Stairs and then back via the Giant Stairs. (quite challenging though). Or you can drive (gravel rd.) all the way to Golden Stairs and hike to the Ruined Castle and back. Make sure you have enough of water and a snack.EDIT: NOT accessible at the moment (April 2022) as there was a landslide on the gravel road leading to the Golden Stairs.

A great way to access the Federal Pass walking track and nearby attractions like The Ruined Castle. Only takes about 20-30mins to transit down the hill. This is quite a rough track: there are some LARGE steps since a small rockslide a while ago that is still being repaired. Campground with pit-toilets and rain water tanks nearby to the South of the foot of the stairs.

Its a great place to start your walk towards Ruined Castle and Mount Solitary. The roads arent that great for small cars, lots of rolling bumps. The views are as great as Echo point lookout if you walk even more down the track, with barely any people.

Steep Descent Into The Valley followed by beautiful high canopy, cool walk in the valley. the walk out ...it's challenging so leave enough time and bring some water

It's a difficult hike, but the view is worth that effort. We walked to the Ruined Castle from the cablecar, and then on the way back we went upstairs through the Golden Stairs. Nice view on the Three sisters and the surrounding cliffs.

The golden stairs hike is hard to reach if you don't have access to a car. From Katoomba it's a good hour walk. By car it's possible to reach the trail easily, more so by 4wd. A regular car might make the trip but keep in mind that it's a dirt road with lots of potholes and cracks from waterflows. There's one particular part that's very bumpy and may be trouble for a regular car. At the trail there's space for about 10 cars, but parking along the road is possible as well. The trail is indicated clearly with a big sign about the enviroment. We went on a rather cool day (20°C) after some rain and had enough with 2 litres of water per person for the approx. 5hr walk. (We went to the castle ruins and back) There's a connection to two other trails well: toward Federal pass (cable car and Scenic World) and toward the campground which is at least 12 km if you're halfway the trail. Both are indicated. The path is mostly clear to follow, with a steep descend down at the start, a nice and shady forest walk and a short climb up towards the castle. (It takes some imagination to see the castle) Once thereand, we found a place to climb up the rockformation and had an amazing view over the surrounding mountains and valleys. Totally worth it!

Golden Stairs is a great starting point for either a round-trip day hike to Mt Solitary or a 1-way traverse across the Jamison Valley to the Kedumba Valley. The latter is 18km but worth it. We went with Blue Mountains Guides who were great.
