In 1962 Perth was spotlighted on the global stage with the hosting of the VII British Empire and Commonwealth Games. Locals and citizens of Western Australia alike have long placed historical significance on the site at Perry Lakes were sporting dreams were lived both on the International stage and at the local school level. The architecture of the games was a revival of the modernist approach and the style is still clearly evident today in the now private homes that once provided homes to the Games Athletes.Built in the early 1960’s, the Empire Games Stadium and Scoreboard were also built in this modernist style and were fine examples of advances in technology, especially the stadium with its counter-levered canopy that protected spectators as they observed events in the field. The scoreboard, with its incandescent light bulbs provided a whole new approach to scoring, no longer did a person have to flip over numerical cards or write figures on a big chalkboard. Messages, results and scores could be easily and clearly displayed for all to see.
