The best part besides the authentic steam train is the very informative commentary coupled with enthusiasm for the rich local history. If you enjoy a little history along the way this ride is worthwhile

Passing through. Stopped for a look. Looks like it would be a fantastic experience. The restoration of the carriages, trains and buildings is very good. A lot of pride going into keeping the history going.

A great way to explore Tasmania’a temperate rainforest.Wilderness railway is a very authentic experience. The journey and the stops are carefully planned, staff are fantastic. The learning of historic past and how people lived there and the ambitions of people to make this railway journey possible is a great experience. The train ride is a great way to spend a day with children. It’s great to learn about the history and go on short walks along the journey.

Wonderful train experience. We were in the fancy carriage with the meals. The meals were disappointing. When you expect lunch but get two cracker entrees, a scone, pumpkin soup and a chocolate, just didn’t quite meet expectations of a “meal”. I would have preferred some Tasmanian cheese on a platter and a nice sandwich. Food was nice though. Service was excellent from our server and the train driver that told us all sorts of history about trains while we were at a stop. Also very helpful staff when making contact before we attended to ask questions about accessible seating. The rainforest is absolutely stunning. The history was also fantastic but unfortunately the presenter was cutting in and out just right when you were about to find something out it would cut out which was frustrating. It was on the expensive side, especially when the food was disappointing, but I would still pay it because it was a unique experience and it costs so much to keep these historic places running. The postcard part was a nice touch!

Half day tour was great as you still get to complete the massive steep ascent! Each carriage has their own guide who tells the history of the railway. There is a cafe halfway up to purchase food with cash however you could just as easily bring a small picnic lunch. Paying extra gets you a served lunch and drink but this doesn't feel especially necessary.Lovely little rainforest walk at the turntable and very cool to see the engine hand-turned.Advertised as a 10-2 tour but didn't return until 10min to 3, we drove from Devonport for the day so a late departure made it a bit dark by the end.

This travels through some spectacular Tassy gorge country. A rich history, your hosts are excellent, and tell a great story. Several stops ease the 5 hour time frame. (Hence the 4 stars)

OMG what an awesome trip.Do yourself a favour book this as far in advance as you can so you get a seat, it is worth it. The leg from Queenstown down is by far the best awesome views, great food and for a steam tragic like me awesome to stand out side on platform and hear and see the small engine working hard on the inclines.Staff were really good. If you have booked the included food and drinks don’t bother having breakfast as you are snacking all through the journey with pretty awesome food.If you do want a breakfast first I would strongly recommend getting to cafe at 7am as it gets very very busy.10 out 10 even on a very wet windy day for us.

This was an excellent experience. I enjoyed the steam engine ride through the wilderness. There are plenty of opportunities to get great photos and to imagine what life used to be like. There are several stops including one with a shop. The food was very reasonably priced given we were a captive audience. The journey is filled with interesting commentary and experiences. It is a good way to spend a day and worth the long journey to a remote part of the island.

Absolutely amazing experience. We had booked the wilderness carriage and was not disappointed at all.Food- was so delicious, I don't like seafood in general but the canapes were great. Scones were the best I've ever had and lunch was so good I'm still bragging about it 2 days later.Train- train went at the perfect pace, everyone could see all the sights without having to rush from window to window, very smooth ride.Service- fantastic. These girls know how to wow their guests. Can't wait to return!

For the steam train enthusiast out there this trip would be amazing. It is scenic and there is a great history behind it all too. The station stops were great and well spaced. Just because of the speed of the train I did feel like it dragged a bit in placed but a great day out for all
