The Austen Tea Room
Pros- Beautiful rooms, lovely table setup including stunning pink roses- Food was presented well- Finger sandwiches were nice enough- Gluten free option was good (I didn’t get gluten poisoning so that’s always a bonus for us coeliacs!)Cons- Service was extremely slowOur sandwiches and hot food trays were delivered within 15 minutes of arrival BUTWe were not asked for tea (or coffee) orders, as we assumed at least a pot of each would be brought to us...but no. Eventually after 45 minutes we asked for some! Only a pot of tea was brought to our table, no coffee. We were then told that had to be ordered by the cup.- Staff and owner not that friendlyPerhaps they were all having a bad day, but there definitely wasn’t service with a smile the day we went!- Hot food was not hot, more like lukewarm on delivery to the table- Had to ask for tomato sauce (who serves pies without that?)They would be more efficient if they planned and prepared better, rather than constantly running backwards and forwards, especially when there are so many little separate rooms.Final verdictUnfortunately I have to say I wouldn’t return here or recommend it to others.

I didn't even know this place existed. I had high tea with my friends and loved it. The setting was beautiful and there was plenty of food to go around. I especially enjoyed the scones with jam and cream. The staff were lovely, I will be back for more high tea here.

We booked in for high tea, the website said it was $55 per person but upon booking was told it was $75 per person. We've been very understanding and considerate with hospitality pricing since covid and it was Mothers Day weekend. We accepted the cost, as we were hoping the food and experience would be worth it. We have had a fair share of high teas before and know you're paying for the experience, atmosphere as well as the food.As soon as we walked in, I wanted to walk out. The general Cafe area is dated and unappealing. High tea was served in smaller rooms at the book which were a little nicer. Staff were very attentive but the food was appalling. The mini quiches, pies and sausage rolls were laughable, not quaint at all. I have had better out of a Coles freezer. The sweets were average. The best thing was the scones which were very tasty. The cream served wasn't clotted, I expected more authenticity for a place based on an English author. For $75 per person, this was daylight robbery. I could have picked this whole meal at the servo and put it on tiered stands at home for under $10. I'm extremely disappointed to say the least.

Four of us had a high tea today and we were all very disappointed.Very pricey at $65 per head for what you got. The only thing good was the actual room but the crockery was tacky. We had mixed sandwiches, that were ok but not what you'd consider to be of high tea standard and not enough. One scone, one meringue, one mini pie, sausage roll and quiche. In which the quality was very poor.I didn't even bother trying the jelly slice, macarons and mini tarts but the others did and said they were below average.I asked if we could have more sandwiches and we were told no and no extra scones. We all left unsatisfied. When we got there it took awhile to get a pot of tea and the sparkling wine. The service was average and we all would not ever go back or recommend anyone waste their money. For $260 for the four of us we could of had a nice lunch elsewhere.

I’m rating this place taking as parameters: coffee quality, staff members and ambiance. I love this semi hidden pearl in Essendon which I discovered by chance one day when luckily, I took the wrong road. Since then, I love stopping by for a coffee every time I’m in the surroundings. The coffee is delicious, creamy, nutty, tasty, perfect froth. Kiuli is a brilliant barista and always attending customers with a smile and the friendliest attitude. The place has many separate rooms where is feasible to have a private gathering or celebration. The decorations are adorable, romantic, refined, I can see the inspiration on Jane Austen in every detail selected to ornament each room. The Austen is frequently busy, visited by locals who stop by to enjoy a cuppa, a treat and a talk with a friend. I’ve taken many pictures for all of you to depict the lovely vibes of this shop. Ceci

MAGNIFICENT! This place is an instant favorite! The coffee is amazing and the food is great. Friendly and obliging staff coupled with the old world charm of the building are what sets the bench mark for all others!

We really enjoyed our lovely high tea. We like the atmosphere, with the lovely decor with the chandeliers and ornate mirrors. We loved the food - and the way it was presented and the staff were very attentive. A lovely experience and we will be back.
