Great memorial

The cenotaph in Rockhampton Botanic Gardens is one of the few war memorials in Queensland which do not have a list of fallen soldiers’ names. It is the largest of all war memorials in Queensland, and is noteworthy that it is still in an original and intact setting. The whole area is tidy and well maintained. In 2016 Rockhampton council replaced Cenotaph date palms that were damaged by Cyclone Marcia in 2015.When the cenotaph was erected in 1924 the Botanic Gardens had already been in existence for fifty-five years. The spot chosen for the war memorial is well elevated, and accessed by several pedestrian paths. It is a well suited as a place for quiet contemplation of the sacrifices made in war.Made from Gracemere Grey granite the obelisk is nearly twenty (20) metres tall and sits on a granite plinth atop a double stepped rock base on the top of a grassy mound. The mound is circled by twelve Canary Island data palms (Phoenix canariensis).If you visit during the day do remember to wear a hat as the war memorial is in an open and very sunny spot in the gardens. Pedestrian access from Ann Street or Phyllis Street.

A fantastic memorial! Very grand showing the wars that Australia have taken part in. The memorial is surrounded by a beautiful garden. Plenty of space to sit down and gather your thoughts.
