South Gorge Beach
Magical spot on Straddie island, really enjoyed the sand and the water there. It's also quite relaxing. It's not supervised by life savers though. If you just want to hang around and enjoy the waves, that's the perfect spot.

Yet another magical spot on Straddie. Great place to sit on beach. But be very careful swimming. It’s not patrolled by Life Savers and while it might look inviting it can be dangerous. It’s different every day. The calm water days are absolutely beautiful.

Unpatrolled beach but very beautiful when calm. The beach is surrounded by high cliffs which provide cool shade during the hot summer months. One of the special places at Straddy.

Was very rough when we visited and was closed to swimming. Some protected grassy spots towards the back. Car park and toilets close by.

Cute little beach (patrolled)The currents were very strong so you could not go too far in.Water was very clear, but full of seaweeds and other natural debris. The beach itself is nice and protected by the two small cliffs on the side but it does not have any shade area

Magical spot and I’m hoping I just chose the wrong day. The ocean and sand was full of plastic. Managed to find a plastic bag in the water and filled it. This wasn’t rubbish left behind, it was plastic from the ocean. Never seen anything like it. Beaches around the corner we’re pristine which confused me even further.

South Gorge beach, next to main beach, is very attractive to families and also to board riders. The life savers have a sign at the entrance warning about the dangerous currents which force them to rescue a few swimmers every day, on average. The current is attractive to board riders because they use it to get out to the waves quickly. But for inexperienced swimmers it can be a big shock. Also, because the beach is narrow and wedge shaped, with cliffs on either side, the water level can rise very quickly. The cliff on the Eastern side provides shade and the unusual shape of the beach provides endless variety. This is a great beach, but take care. If you don’t take time to understand what is going on in the water, don’t swim here. But even then it is worth a visit.

Loved North and South Gorges. We traveled here from San Antonio Texas, and could not be happier with the recommendation by our friends that live in Brisbane. The sunrise's were absolutely amazing and exploring the island itself was great. Highly recommend staying at the Whalewatch Beach Resort.
