Bicentennial Memorial
The Bicentennial Memorial, sometimes referred to as the Wilbraham Liardet Memorial, on Beach Street, Port Melbourne, was designed by the architect, Peter Christoff to firstly commemorate the pioneering role of Wilbraham Liardet acknowledged as the first European settler and founder of Port Melbourne (Sandridge) arriving in 1839 with his family and secondly, as an Australian Bicentennial Project to commemorate the nation's Bicentenary in 1988. It apparently incorporates two bluestone blocks thought to have originated from the foundations of the old sugar mill that was located (demolished in the 1980's) on the corner of Beach Street and Post Office Place. The memorial was unveiled in 1988.
