Kuranda Scenic Railway Freshwater Station
A GREAT way to get to Kuranda Village with a stop to take in Barron Falls. Having done it, you then realise the extreme conditions the early settlers & builders of this railway had to endure.

The longest train through dense forests, cliffs & bridges. Breath taking scenery. Follow @shashigossain

Old train to get back to Cairns. Bench seats are too small for 4 persons so 1 end up standing on the corridor (every row). Cable car was better as you could see more, and avoid being baked in a 40° train cabin.

We caught the cable car up to Kuranda and the train back to the skyrail station. It was interesting. However, it was a long slow train ride back to at least the spot where we got off to catch the bus back to skyrail. You sit in old carriages, and they cram too many on the benches. the allocated seating was supposed to be 4 on each bench seat with 8 of you facing each other. Fortunately it was not full and we only had 6 of us in our seats. Even that was fairly cramped for a 90 minute ride on a hot day. The kids had all had enough long before it finished. The station being original was fairly interesting though. As there are only two trains back, you end up being stuck in Kuranda waiting for the train to depart. There really isn't that much to fill in a few hours. However, if I was to do it again, I would catch the cable car back and you can then leave Kuranda when you want.

Saw my life flash before my eyes.Everything was travelling along beautifully, as my kids and I were looking out, admiring the view when we hears a loud bang and the our whole carriage start to tilt over and we all thought that was the end and we were going over the edge. We must have tilted 30 degrees or more before we can back down onto the track. I am not sure what happen, but everyone in Carriage 7 just looked at each. One of the staff members came into our carriage shaken up, saying she thought we were gone. My children said they are never hoping on a train again.Other than that the trip was beautiful and we got some great shots.Maybe just avoid carriage 7.

My ticket was for the train to Kuranda and Skyrail back down. I chose the diamond package for both portions. The train is not air conditioned and the windows are open. The Gold Car was well worth it. The seats were very comfortable and there is something lovely about leaning back and enjoying leisurely service on a train while watching the scenery go by. There was a card with lots of information about the building of the tracks and overhead commentary as well. There is a toilet on the train. Lightning storms cancelled my Skyrail ride, but a bus was provided to get me back to my car at Smithfield.

Train does go very slow, but on the return trip, the train completely stopped 700m from the station for 25min due to them having organised a welder on the track and were unsure if he was clear of the track. The management and communication is terrible, especially when there are 2 trains returning at the same time everyday and they can not communicate to get clearance between those times. Very very poor especially at the price they charge.

No air-conditioning on a train at Cairns is torturous. It was 37°C outside so not recommended on a hot day... View is nice and very educational. However, everything is in English and can be difficult to understand for some foreigners. Staff on the train was lovely and very considerate.

Tourist railway which operates along the heritage listed Cairns to Kuranda railway line. We caught the train at Freshwater Station which has a ticket office, tea rooms and toilets. Train ride was slow but comfortable and relaxing with amazing scenery.

Fabulous experience to ride the old train up the windy hill to Kuranda. It was very interesting to learn about the history of how the railway was built, and the views were spectacular. It is quite a long trip so if you have kids you may hear a few ‘are we there yet?’ Questions, but it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Views of the waterfall along the way were a highlight, as well as the lovely old fashioned Kuranda railway station with its many plants and old world feel.
