About the Business

Magna Carta Place | National Capital Authority | The design is based on an ancient English funeral mound or barrow, which has been cut away to reveal the treasure inside (being the Magna Carta). The small mound in the middle holds a time capsule. The etched marble walls depict (on the left) the life and times of Magna Carta and (on the right) the development of the Rule of Law and parliamentary system in Australia. A copper dome sits over the monument, with words cut out of the copper around it – these are the Latin text of chapter 29 of the 1297 version of Magna Carta).

Magna Carta Place
A pleasant and small memorial in Canberra, near the parliamentary gardens and house. Aside from an information board and centra place, not too much else to see, but educational nonetheless.

Magna Carta Place
Hidden away is the Magna Carta monument, which is a tribute to the underlying of our Constitution. Written in 1297, it states that no one in society is above the law: not the King nor his subjects, not the government nor the governed.Shame it's in its current location and not closer to the building so more people could see and learn about it.

Magna Carta Place
You need to have a deep interest in history for this place to really mean anything. It was a gift of the UK Government -- it's a reminder of that country's most important export to much of the world. It's looking a little tatty at the moment, so expect some renovations.
