The birds nest until March. There are two predator fences, an outer 2 m fence with a gate and an inner 1 m electric fence. If you bring binoculars, you can easily see the birds from a small platform at the parking area

Hidden place in Portland.Public viewing area is a bit far away from the birds. A binocular recommended. Better to check at Portland Visitor information Centre and find out when/what time they are running a free volunteer tours.

The area is protected so you can see from distant only, it would be good to take binoculars otherwise watch them on discovery channel. The photo below is 10x times from iPhone.

This place is famous for being the only gannet colony in Victoria that’s on land. It’s a spillover from the Lawrence rocks just off the shore. I frantically organised a trip to revisit here because of a rare bird found here by several individuals as of August 23rd. If you are into birds, this may be a special opportunity you won’t want to miss! There are two Cape Gannets in this colony. Cape Gannets are the African species of Gannet, and are very rarely blown here from the southern coast of Africa. They look very similar to our resident species, but they have an all black tail and a prominent stripe that goes down most of the neck. If you want to see some rare birds, this is your chance! They have been here since September 18th and are still there as of the 30th. I went and saw them on the 23rd. Come here if you’re interested! If you are not a bird fanatic, this won’t be too interesting for you. The Gannets are far away, protected by a fence in order to preserve them. The weather is also highly unstable, and when I was there, it rained relentlessly and gave me a headache that didn’t go away until the next day. It was worth it for the birds.Second photo is a Cape Gannet

This is a great experience if you are a nature lover! The only mainland colony in Australia, it is fenced and visits to a closer viewing area is through a local volunteer on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 5:15pm.

Check the breeding season before you go.We are staying in Portland for 4 nights and there are no tours before we leave. Drove there anyway but no gannets landed in the area. A couple flew close to the shore.Gannets are all at Lawrence Rocks, can see them with a good lens.

Beautiful spot to see the surrounding Portland scenery aswell as the Gannets although they are at a fair distance.

We managed to see the beautifulcolony of Gannets, you get a better view of them from the viewing platform next to the shooting range. The rest of the place around the colony has been sealed off .

Is a bit off the beaten track to find but signed fairly well. Bring binoculars or a telescope for the best view. You need to get out and climb to the viewing platform to see the birds
