Climbing Boys
In 1975 the then Caulfield City Council commissioned Melbourne artist Phillip Cannizzo to create statues for Caulfield Park and they were to represent different aspects of community life. Cannizzo created the group of statues located since 1980 on the corner of Balaclava and Hawthorn Roads. They comprise of what have become to be known as the 'Paper Boy,' 'Mother and Child' and the 'Climbing Boys'. So what are these statues about?Well 'The Paper Boy,' is said to be dedicated to a well-known and loved paper boy who was struck and killed by a passing vehicle at the intersection of Balaclava and Hawthorn Roads and the statue of the 'Mother and Child' is believed to represent a mother and child resting after shopping in the area. So what about the Climbing Boys?Well I really have no idea what the three, twenty foot climbing poles with small boys clinging at the top is meant to represent but the small bronze statue is obviously of a young girl watching the climbers. Perhaps someone will tell us what the 'Climbing Boys' statue is meant to represent in terms of community life.
