Beehive Casemates
No bees or hives, but a lovely Eastern Water Dragon was standing guard.Would've been great to be able to explore the casemate properly but, understandably, they're locked up tight.Lovely view of the sea, and plenty to explore from the outside.

Great piece of Sydney history Beehive Casemate is a historical fortification located on the banks of Obelisk Bay, in Sydney Harbour, New South Wales, Australia. Construction began in 1871 and was completed in 1874. The fort was constructed under the supervision of colonial architect James Barnet. The underground Casemate was one of the first to be locally designed and built after the withdrawal of British troops in 1870 and the Cardwell Reforms. The fortification contains three domed chambers that were used as gun emplacements. Each chamber had a small opening or window for the gun to fire through with each window looking out towards the Sydney Heads. The underground chambers were made of brick and mortar and were built into the excavated cavities in the sandstone bedrock. They were intended to fire on enemy ships as they navigated the passages around Sow and Pigs Reef, within the entrance to Sydney Harbour.

If you like bees you will probably like this place. The rocks taste great when you lick them.

The bees were courteous in their approach and I eventually let them perform their ancient ritual.

Really fun trying to scout around looking for the old bunkers, saw an Eastern water dragon and plenty of bird life, as well as the brilliant view through the mouth of the harbour. A few youths tried to get into the old structures, but the security was doing frequent patrols.

These historic gun emplacements carved into the cliff face in Obelisk Bay is a must see if you are in the area. This particular area is probably the best preserved of all of the sydney Harbour gun emplacements which have been destroyed and dismantled over the years. Dating from 1871 with 3 separate chambers to explore it is a unique and vital piece of Sydney history.
