I attended the East Coast Kayak two-day basic skills event over the weekend of 18-19 Feb. 2023.Nine participants ages 11 to 80 yrs and close to zero experience took partOur two instructors Peter and Danny with forty years plus experience between them put us all at ease from the moment we turned up at the Kayak shop on Jetty roadSandringham on Saturday morning. After briefly introducing ourselves we got down to a discussion about appropriate and inappropriate clothing for various conditions on the water and suitable footwear to protect our feet on rocks and shoreline hazards. The Café next door provided for our needs as we absorbed information and were kitted out and fitted with personal floatation devices. Peter and Danny were skilled in ensuring everybody was being included in a discussion about safety on the water where to get weather information how to interpret it and how it related to any proposed trip regarding onshore and offshore wind. strength of the wind and how it relates to paddling speeds and thus with time allowed for the trip.It would be easy to overload newbies with informationbut our instructors only introduced new information at a pace and depth that we were all comfortable with referring back to the group and individuals to clarify details and further questions.last session before lunch having been introduced to our Kayaks and shown how to fit them to our specific needs we learned how to comfortably and safely enter and exit the craft and the water. The afternoon found us in the sheltered waters of the harbour amidst an array of beautiful yachts learning to sit properly in the boat, to be relaxed whilst holding our paddle, use a number of basic paddle strokes, and rotate our torso to drive the boat with the paddle rather than to use our arm muscles, which are puny compared to the muscles of the torso.By the end of the afternoon we had learned all the skills required to move our kayaks anywhere we desired to take them, to move them forward, backward sideways, and turn them right, left, and on the spot; more than that we had all deliberately fallen out of our boats and taken turns as a victim or rescuer, At the end of the first day we had all experienced re-entering a kayak after having fallen out; have managed to empty the boat of all the water and make a safe re-entry with the assistance of, and or, having given assistance to a fellow kayaker.A full-on adventure and an enormous learning curve thanks to the professionalism of our instructors. The second day consisted of more instruction on weather predictions and the expected effect on proposed trips. sea conditions; planning for safe havens should conditions change; discussion on previous days' events; more coffee and discussion around the trip we were about to make from Sandringham to Half Moon Bay. How to ensure that the group stayed together, who should lead, and who should follow up the rear? how the slowest paddler should be looked after by the group. communication via paddle and whistle signals. Then we set off on a 4k paddle to Half Moon Bay for Lunch, which took about 1.5 hours.on the water, we had meet-ups to receive information on how to best use the conditions, what various markers and buoys meant, where we should paddle in relation to them, how far to keep offshore, and why. How to use skegs and rudders and the difference they make to handling the boat. After an enjoyable lunch and conversation with newly made friends we made the return trip via a circumnavigation of the wreck of the Cerberus just off the shore of Half Moon Bay.learning more of planning the route so as to take advantage of the prevailing wind and waves.A short debrief following taking the Kayaks out of the water and loading them onto a trailer and the distribution of sets of course notes and a most instructive active enjoyable weekend was over . We all left with the knowledge and skills to practice and hone to enjoy Many many more kayak adventures for the remainder of our lives! Great value!Thank you Peter and Danny you did a great job!

My son, Simon and myself had a great 3 hour private lesson with Cam. The course content and Cam's knowledge and delivery of the lesson exceeded my expectations. First hour was theory, covering map reading, wind, tides backed up with real life examples. The next two hours were on the water teaching how to best balance yourself and all aspects of efficient paddling. We spent some time on how to recover from capsizing, I had lots of practise because I fell out of my inflatable kayak a few times. Finished the class feeling so much wiser and more prepared for my next kayak outing. I thoroughly recommend East Coast Kayaks and Cam to anyone who is new to kayaking, to ensure their kayaking is safe and enjoyable.
