I miss the friendly people. I miss the smell of Cadmium and Purification. I enjoyed pouring the metal. The team work in a disiplined setting. I have fond memories in retirement. Wishing you all well and i hope Nystar and its people progress well.....Smelt it.... Smelt Melt Export Large Tasmanian International Trade.One day I will see you in Valhalla, we pour and make Zinc all day, and we will party with beer and celebrate all through the night.

I've visited many zinc smelters in my time but Nyrstar takes the cake- it is truly one-of-a-kind! Ahhhh zinc- the underdog of the elemental world finally given it's day in the sun with this monument to heavy metal ground water leeching and marvel in all it's cargo ship bridge crashing splendor! Ask for Bazza at reception for the formal tour!

The complexity and care that goes into this never ceases to amaze me. I would marvel at its beauty on the Mona Roma more than anything at Mona itself any day! Definitely a highlight of Hobart

For a site that's over 100 years old and still going strong it is a true testament to not only the success of production of their world class zinc but also Nystars safety and maintenance culture.Yes it does at times emit smells associated with production and has areas that employees can be exposed to chemicals like all industrial sites but Nystar has a serious focus on its workers health and safety though safe work procedures, thorough PPE as well as health, fitness and chemical exposure monitoring with results that reflect how serious they take their obligations and the effectiveness of them.Overall a great place to be employed thats run by sector management teams that are open to and encourage worker input and are pro active to keeping employees safe and prevent environmental impact.Any substance seen emitting from the sites towers is merely steam and in any case of contaminated material flowing within the site, all is captured, safely contained and reprocessed.Hobarts environmental department conduct their independent examinations of local waterways and the results are publicly available and show that despite the sites locality on the river derwent both the condition of the foreshore and water quality is well within acceptable guidelines, infact, marine life is flourishing.Highly recommend Nystar as a workplace, one where interactions with fellow employees from all levels are pleasant and working conditions are excellent.
