Really great cafe to see live performances. Relaxed atmosphere and on trend decor. Some of the seats can be a little uncomfortable but easy enough to swap chairs around. Good food and drinks too!

Went to my first jazz theatre night at Smiths. Will definitely be coming back!! Fabulous atmosphere! Eclectic set of comfy furniture, soft lighting and relaxing music to chill out and relax in. Great to hear a variety of upcoming jazz singers who want to experiment in public - some a bit shaky, some that unexpectedly blow your socks off with their talent. A great couple of entertaining hours for just $15.

My favourite place in Canberra. I love taking random instruments off the walls and trying them out. They also run so many amazing events that cater to lots of different interests. Highly recommend.

We were just passing by and decided to stop for coffee and a sweat treat, soy latte was good and the peanut butter chocolate brownie was really nice. Staff was very friendly and service good. Interesting place.

Great little live entertainment venue. Inclusive and welcoming. Standard drinks and sweet treats - Cafe cakes and sandwich style on offer. Reasonably priced as well.Caught the show Capital Punishment (pun and wordplay competition). It's a regular gig and as an intestate traveller it's a gig worth getting along to. Kid friendly as well.

Played some good scrabble and had some lovely tea and coffee with one of my girls here this arvo! Some of the people there were crazy though so minus 1 star. Other then that a lovely experience!

I'm pretty disappointed to leave a bad review, however I thought I should share this in case anyone in a similar situation is considering going to Smiths. I bought tickets for my son (18) and my daughter (17) this week, as a late graduation gift. I asked my daughter to call ahead and check she would be able to get in, as she was accompanied by a legal adult and I had bought the tickets. It was so disheartening to hear the way my daughter was spoken to, in all fairness the venue is loud and the line wasn't great, but the man who picked up was incredibly condescending and rude. I have had some lovely experiences at Smiths (which I have paid for), but I definitely won't be going again after hearing how they speak to young girls.

I just love Smith’s Alternative. Such a cool, no fuss venue with a chilled bohemian vibe. Nigel and the team do an amazing job of supporting Canberra’s creative arts community. Highly recommended for drinks, gigs and an eclectic range of creative activities anyone can join. All you need to bring is a sense of irony and a big dollop of enthusiasm. Good coffee and brownies are a definite added bonus.
