Engage Talks are opportunities for schools and other youth groups to have an Engage Education Foundation leader come and speak to students and other young people. These talks are offered on four different broad topics and are suited to students in years nine and above.

Given the nature of the Engage Education Foundation, we are fortunate to have a number of highly motivated and already highly successful young people who volunteer their time to support other students. Because of the talent we have within our Engage community in 2010 a new project was launched: Engage Talks.

Each Engage Talk can be tailored to suit your group of students, whether that's a single class, year level or entire school. Best of all, Engage Talks are just $55 for metropolitan Melbourne and only slightly higher for rural location.

Motivation Through Goal-Setting

Wanting to do well in VCE is one thing, but actually finding the motivation to achieve this can be something completely different. Our presenters will talk about how they discovered the drive to achieve outstanding VCE results through a discussion of goal-setting and skills that can be used for self-motivation.

Just a few of the topics covered:

  • Identifying our strengths and weaknesses
  • What makes a goal effective
  • How to achieve these goals
  • Finding motivation specific to each individual

Study and Time-Management

Friends, family, sport, Facebook, music: there are so many activities outside of school that it can be a struggle to find time to study. In this talk, we’ll discuss proven organisational tips on time management and procrastination avoidance, as well as the ‘five Ws’ of studying:

  • Who to study with and who else can be utilised while studying?
  • Where to study?
  • What to study to get the most out of learning within time limitations?
  • When in the day, week and year to study?
  • Why study at all?

Stress, Anxiety and Healthy Habits

The emphasis put on performance in school can be a lot to deal with, especially while trying to juggle schoolwork, family, friends and extracurricular activities. Presented by a recent high-achieving VCE graduate this talk will focus on how their experience taught them to deal with stress in relation wreck to school, rather than the psychological causes of stress. In particular, they will discuss:

  • Typical causes of anxiety;
  • Stress prevention;
  • How they managed their stress; and
  • How stress can be used in a positive way.

Tackling Assessment

We often hear students ask “I did all of the practice questions, why didn’t I do well in the SAC?” or “I studied so hard, how come I didn’t get the mark I wanted?”.

The focus of this talk is on effective ways of studying in order to maximize understanding in a sometimes limited time. Students will gain an understanding of what to actually do when sitting down to study or tackle an exam, through the perspective and experience of a high-achieving VCE student.

Some skills included in this talk:

  • Active reading and note-taking
  • Ways of studying apart from note-taking
  • Practice questions, SACs and exams – the different approaches for different stages
  • Techniques to use when in the assessment
